When you create or edit a Space, the platform goes through a generation phase that produces your avatar, indexes your knowledge base, and builds the experience. Under normal circumstances this completes within 1-3 minutes.
If your Space has been stuck on "Generating" for more than 10 minutes, use the steps below to diagnose and resolve the issue.
Step 1: Refresh the page
Generation runs in the background. Sometimes the browser UI gets out of sync with the actual status. Refresh the page - if generation completed, the Space will appear ready.
Step 2: Check the avatar image
The most common cause of a stuck generation is an avatar image that cannot be processed. The system requires a realistic human face with clearly visible eyes, nose, mouth, and lips. Images that fail silently include:
- Stylised illustrations or cartoons without clear facial features
- Faces with the mouth or key features obscured (e.g. face coverings, sunglasses, masks)
- Images with no face at all (logos, landscapes, abstract art)
To test whether the image is the cause: recreate the Space using a generic pre-built avatar from the library instead of a custom image. If generation completes, the original image was the problem. See Custom Avatar Images: What Works and What Does Not for full requirements.
Step 3: Check System Status
Platform-level incidents (typically caused by upstream Azure service issues) can cause generation to stall for everyone. Check the System Status article for any active or recent incidents. If there is an active incident, wait for it to resolve before retrying.
Step 4: Check your session
If you left the editor tab open for a long time before starting generation, your browser session may have expired. Close the tab, open a fresh session, and start the creation process again.
Step 5: Contact support
If none of the above resolves the issue, submit a support ticket including:
- The URL of the affected Space (if one was created)
- The time the issue started
- A screenshot of the current state
- The URL or a description of the avatar image used
What about the "Start" button being unresponsive?
If clicking Start or Preview does nothing, the Space may still be in a generating state from a previous action. Refresh the page. If the button is still unresponsive after a refresh and no generation is in progress, try clearing your browser cache and retrying in an incognito window.
Note on error messages: Avatar generation is asynchronous. If your image fails validation, you will not see the error at the moment of upload. The error message will appear the next time you open the Space editor or test it in preview mode, prompting you to re-upload or choose a different avatar.
