Cannot Download, Play Offline, or Use MP3 Players with Napster V6 PC Client

Issue

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Users who have installed Napster V6 PC Client will no longer be able to play tracks offline or transfer to MP3 Players. Some users may not be able to access Napster PC Client, and it may throw an error message “Please check your internet connection” and may fail to login to the Napster PC Client. You may also get similar error messages when you try to authorize, play or stream downloaded tracks as given below.

  • Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file
  • Check your internet connection
  • Computer could not be authorized
  • Playback & MP3 Player sync issues

For some users, the Napster PC client may also crash when they try to download a track.

Cause

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This issue occurs because Microsoft released the Windows 10 Anniversary Update on 2nd Aug 2016 which removed the support for WMDRM tracks and offline playback. Device sync would also fail due to this recent change, and we will no longer support this feature.

Resolution

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Users who have Napster V6 PC Client installed will still be able to use the application and can access other features except for download content for playback and transfer tracks to MP3 devices. License for downloaded tracks will expire, and the playback will switch to stream only.

Our detailed analysis of the data showed that this functionality has very little success and it doesn't merit keeping it running. So we made the difficult decision to withdraw it. However, Napster plans to focus more on other great features that will be added in future updates. However, you can upgrade your Windows OS to the latest version, and download the Windows Universal application from Windows store that allows you to download songs for offline use. You can also use the Napster app on Android,iPhone and Windows Phone and download unlimited songs and play songs offline just like your MP3 Players.
